Hellcat

The Hellcat was a project that I have had interest in for sometime. Like the DH2 I had given this design much thought and built the boat numerous times in my head. I wanted a design that I would feel comfortable hunting larger bodies of water, serve as tender for our layout boat, as well as the ability to haul more "stuff" as all duckhunters do. As I watched this boat come together I kept trying to think of a name that truly fit the style of the boat. One evening while trying to back up far enough in the shop to get the whole boat in a photo it struck me, "this thing looks like a tank!". After a short internet search I found a WWII tank named the M-18 Hellcat and never looked back.

This boat was completed the last week of January, 2007 so I am still in the process of putting her through the paces. To date, I have been nothing but completely satisfied! While there is still much water time I'd like to put on this boat, I am very confident she will live up to expectations. I have not had a chance to take the boat out in rough water yet but if my tests so far are any indications I (as well as any buyer) will be happy. The boat hops on plane in a matter of seconds and runs at a top speed of 42 mph while being powered by a Yamaha 90hp 2 stroke outboard with a 17 pitch prop. She drafts about 7" with only the operator. I have an asterick by the weight capacity, right now all I can say is its a sigficant amount. This past youth day we had 3 adults, 2 kids, gear and 10 dozen decoys and it barely looked loaded. My intention is that I will take the first production boat of the Hellcat for USCG testing ( a process that needs to be completed before all electrical components as well as a few other items are placed). The production model will be very similar to the prototype with only a few advantageous changes.

Update: May 2008 - Even with the birth of our first born son last November I managed to get the boat out quite a bit, including some fishing down at the coast last fall. I've currently put abour 60 hours of runtime on the Hellcat and I have been nothing but pleased. The boat has been out in 15-20mph winds and up to 3' seas, while not the smoothest of rides due to the flat bottom safety was never an issue

I am also open to modifications, just like my other models as long as they are feasible. The most obvious on the Hellcat is the steering setup and cockpit layout. The Hellcat can be set up as shown with a center console, a small side console or as a tiller steer. The latter two would significantly open up the floor plan more. I can also eliminate the covered storage that backs up to the bow bulkhead to easily add room for one more person. Set up with a center console, the boat will comfortably hunt 3 adults plus a dog. However, the other setups would make 4-5 adults reasonable. A livewell is also possible.

If you are interested in this boat, I invite you to come down and test drive the Hellcat. We live on High Rock lake so testing can be done with ease. If you are looking for a truly custom open water design, look no further!

Hellcat Photos

Recently got around to building a layout rack for our UFO. Pretty simple design that allows me to trailer the layout longways on the Hellcat while turning it perpendicular to the boat for motoring out to our hunting area.

I installed some threaded inserts right above the front lights to attach a bracket that has an eyebolt and casters (to keep the layout from resting on the bow light when pulling it in)

Here's what the brackets look like.

Longways for trailering.

Perpendicular to the boat.

Just for fun...

Payment:

All boats will be pre-sold (no inventory on hand).  A $ 6000 down-payment shall be due up front and the remaining cost shall be due upon delivery/pickup of the boat.  General build time will be approximately 2 months.

I will accept Mastercard/Visa through Paypal, however there will be a 3% charge to cover the fees associated with Paypal.

I will deliver or meet for a reasonable fee.  If you would like to have the boat shipped, I will handle freighting obligations on this end at the buyers expense.

North Carolina Buyers are responsible for 3% sales tax.

The buyer will be responsible for furnishing a trailer and motor.  I can, however, purchase a trailer locally at the buyer's expense.  The best source I've found for trailers is AK McCallum out of Fayetteville, NC.  $1229 for a galvanized trailer, with galvanized axle, padded bunks, bearing protectors, winch, castor jack, side loading guides, aluminum fenders and 13 " tires rated for 2000lbs.  I charge $200 (subject to change with the gas prices...lol)  if you would like me to pick this trailer up, as this a 6 hour round trip.
